My Early Crafts

It has been an interesting week
Was cleaning out some cupboards and found this needlework I did when I was a child in Primary school so they must be at least 48 years old but possibly older
I notice one has some mildewy marks on it Any advice on how to remove it?
The box I remember doing at school The needlwork I did under my Mum's guidance
More lovely siggies came and my first from Denmark
I have reached one hundred now
I have been blanket stitch appliqueing my draught horse quilt
Some photos soon
Lorraine and I went to see Mum in Hospital the other day and we decided to visit MacDonalds to get a cappacino
Standing in front of the plate glass window waiting when all of a sudden we see a car driving flat out toward us then an almighty bang
Luckily for us she hit the pillar between the windows
Turns out the stupid woman was four times the legal alcohol limit and this was at 2.00 in the afternoon
That was my excitment for the week

  1. Gosh you need to buy a lottery ticket after that experience Illene! I have a hanky box my dear Grannie made for me similar to your little sewing box - I really treasure it. How sweet that you still have those from your childhood. Best wishes, Jill x

  3. Illene, your embroidery work from when you were younger is so darling! Here's a hint on how to remove the mildew...can you get "Biz" at the supermarket where you live? If so, fill a bucket with warm water, add about 1/2 cup of Biz and let it soak for a few hours, or overnight if the stain is bad. Then, rinse out with clean water and hang in the sun to dry. That stuff works miracles. I use if for all of my vintage linens. If you can't get Biz, try some white vinegar - dab in on the mildew stain and let sit for a few hours, rinse and hang in the sun to dry. That should do it!

Wow, I'm so happy that woman did not hit you and your daughter! God was watching!!!!

    XOXO,

  4. What lovely items! I especially am drawn to that box you made. It looks very similar to the ones I made out of my Oma's post cards. She collected postcards with cats on them (very similar to yours) and then when we were done looking at them, made card houses out of them, with a pointed steeple and sewed them together around the edge like yours...I've been wanting to make another, but am still collecting postcards since you need two cards for each side.

    Thanks for the memories ;-)

  5. I just love the needlework from when you were younger...so darling. I also remember the box from somewhere, I think my mom may have had one.
So happy God was watching out for you that day with that crazy driver.
    Take care,

  6. Beautiful needlework for one so young! So glad the post was there, too. You would have needed the coffee and a sit down after that fright!

  7. Love your little box and cute little cats on the embroidery.

I am so pleased that woman didn't hurt anyone. I don't understand the drink driving - there really is no excuse..

  8. People drink to block their own problems and unfortunatly do not think about the terrible things they bring to others as a result! I hope the driver of the car gets the shock treatment she requires by being shown a replay - and then gets ongoing support with her own problems! Terrible! Poor you and Lorraine, all you needed on a day out visiting together. Hope all is well with mum, daughter and hubby.

Your trip down memory lane is BEAUTIFUL! Just love those works of art.
Mildew marks are difficult but in addition to the good tips above, may I add lemon juice? Folllowed by careful normal wash. Good luck.

  10. Hi Illene, I wonder how much advertising, radio & TV media coverage etc has to be out there for people to get the message...don't drink and drive?! I'm so glad you guys weren't hurt. Just love your needlework from when you were at primary school. You must love looking back reflecting on it. Kind regards, Anita.

  12. Hello Illene, Love your treasures from the past. Perhaps one of Shannon Lush's books has a hint on the correct way to clean the linen.
    Happy Monday.

  14. Hi Illene, Your embroidery from your childhood reminded me of how much I did as a child but I don't have a single piece. In March I was visiting an aunt in Oz and commented on her lovely tatted doily. I was a bit embarrassed when she told me I'd made it and given it to her when I was 13. I wouldn't want an experience like you had with that car! Glad you weren't injured.
